CANbus Electronic Pressure Transmitter

To achieve effective control in mobile machine applications, information about the status of each device must be relayed to other parts of the system. A Controller Area Network (CAN) bus allows devices connected to each other through a digital network to exchange information without the use of a computer.

CANbus has become the standard for communications among devices in mobile machines and allows very good control and optimization of processes. Such systems are economical, easy to wire, and have good transfer rates, even with no repeaters. However, the output signal of standard pressure transmitters in most mobile machine applications is analog and cannot be communicated through CANbus, which operates only with digital signals that follow a defined protocol. Electronic pressure measuring instruments with digital output signals compatible with communications protocols are not common, and those that are available are expensive and difficult to integrate.

Model MHC-1

To address this particular problem of the mobile machine market, WIKA’s experts set out to create a new type of pressure sensor. Based on their extensive experience in bus systems and pressure measuring instrumentation, they developed the type MHC-1 electronic pressure transmitter. The MHC-1 converts an analog pressure signal to binary, and formats it according to the requirements of the chosen communications protocol. The MHC-1 has been specifically designed to withstand the extreme and harsh working conditions of construction and agricultural machinery, industrial trucks, cranes, and other mobile machines. The MHC-1 works for pressures from 1,000 psi to 10,000 psi and within a wide range of temperatures.

To provide better resistance to the shock and vibration normally encountered in mobile machine applications, the thin-film sensor of the MHC-1 is welded. All stainless construction and ingress protection IP 6K9K shield the MHC-1 from the harmful effects of the environment and the media. The MHC-1 features high electromagnetic (EMC) protection and offers most standard process connections. One option comes with an integrated input and output connector (Y connector) for easy and secure installation. The output signal of the MHC-1 can be formatted to follow CANopen or SAE J1939 protocols. The MHC-1 can be delivered pre-configured and ready to be incorporated into the process.

The MHC-1 has been designed and proven for mobile machines. It goes through a special series of tests that simulate the severe operating conditions of mobile machine applications to ensure it provides accurate and reliable information. The converted output signal of the MHC-1 allows communicating pressure measurements to the rest of the system for optimum control and performance.
